Smart spike 60, 12v MR16, Solid Copper Spike Light
The Smartspike 60 solid copper spike light is a stylish quality built fully adjustable spot light, ideal for use in any garden or outdoor space to highlight, plants, trees or statues. The high quality solid copper body provides added durability to this IP65 outdoor spot light and can be used near coastal
environments, being highly weather resistant and rust proof. Comes complete with a choice of 2m or 5m cable.
Low voltage is the safer option in the garden due to the ground being dug etc. You will need to use a transformer which matches the lamp voltage, for example if you had 6 fittings each with a MR16 5w LED lamp that would be 6 x 5w = 30 watts so you would need a transformer that was 40w as you need some spare capacity on it to function correctly. LED MR16 lamps can use standard toroidal type transformers.
Lamp Colour (Kelvins)
The colour of a lamp is defined as a measurement called kelvins. A standard GLS light bulb in your house would be 2,700 kelvins
which is in the warm colour spectrum and a lamp with 5,000 kelvins would be at the very cold white spectrum.
12v Installation
Choosing the style of a product is only part of the equation you must also think of where that product will be used and how
it will be installed. All exterior lighting products on our web site have an IP rating appropriate to each light fitting
and its intended application and is therefore fit for purpose. Water ingress is the enemy for outdoor lighting and the
products supplied are only as good as the installation. The weakest point is always cable joints. All joints must be
made 100% watertight and this can be done using IP68 cable connectors and/or waterproof junction boxes which are then
filled with a re-enterable liquid gel mix. All joints where possible should be made above ground for easy access and
reduced water ingress. When installing ground buried lights adequate drainage systems should be put in place especially
in clay-based soil areas. If possible, use ground surface spike lights rather than a buried light. Care must be
taken with the cable runs and not to install transformers more than 30 metres away from the furthest fitting to avoid
any voltage drop. Cabling should be 2 core Rubber HO5RN-F or HO7RN-F and not PVC. PVC leads to capillary action over
time especially with UV degradation. Always check the correct type of transformer you need for your fittings. We recommend
wiring in parallel with Toroidal AC and LED DC drivers. But when using Milliamp mA LED drivers, they should always be
wired in series. Plug and Play kits are simply a case of daisy chaining the fittings via plug and play junction boxes,
connectors and extension cables using a 2-pin plug arrangement.
All exterior lights must be installed by a certified NIC EIC electrician and should be signed off by an electrician with
Part P certification. There are a selection of waterproof jointing kits and boxes available on this web site.
